Life in New York

I moved to New York City in November, 2004. I've now been here nearly 9 months. I'm amazed at how much work it has been to acclimate to New York City. Don't get me wrong, I like being here. But, I'm regularly overwhelmed by choices, asphalt and lack of nature.

I'd visited many times over the years, but to actually move here and start living the life can be a bit much. And, I'm more spoiled than nearly everyone but the Olson Twins. I live a block from where I work. I have my own bathroom and a full-sized washer and dryer where I live. A big kitchen and living room, too.

I also have space in a community garden and have fresh tomatoes, basil, peppers, cucumbers and maybe watermelon. I even (sort of) got to party with Bette Midler, Glenn Close and Robert DeNiro in the garden a few months ago.

My job is very enjoyable. There's lots of research on technology and facilities. I work with a lot of dedicated, committed people. And, I'd like to think we help make a difference and improve lives.

I do miss the kind of hard work I used to get to do when I was building houses in Atlantic Beach, FL and Eastern Kentucky. There the work was hard and when I went home most days, I felt like I'd really accomplished something. I think there's something great about seeing tangible results from your work.

Now, many of the jobs I do are less obvious, though, also important for this organization.
