What's Happening in New Orleans
I think we've become a nation that tries to solve problems by throwing money or bullets at it. Not in particular, but in general.
Many seem to look back on the 60's as a team of discovery and wonder. The U.S.A. was working on sending a man to the moon. We were also protesting against the establishment.
Now, we have thousands of people without inhabitable homes down south and the main way we're dealing with it is by requesting donations. No matter how much money is thrown at the problem, though, it takes people who can turn those donations into roofs, walls, rooms and homes.
I'm surprised that the Democratic party hasn't used this as an opportunity to excite the young people of this country to get them involved in volunteerism and some hard work. It's a chance to get people from all over the country together and as they meet each other and work together, they'll see that people are basically the same and basically good. It doesn't matter if we're from red states or blue states.
We all dislike the thought of people suffering needlessly when we can help in some way. We dislike the thought of children going hungry, and receiving poor educations, and not living in a simple, decent affordable home.
This has nothing to do with the argument of should we be continuing to provide financial support for communities who choose to live in hurricane and flood zones.
I'm going to head down to the New Orleans (or Biloxi or Mobile) area in March and April and hope to use my carpentry skills to fix roofs and provide support in those areas. I hope that this country will call on others and motivate them to help out, too.
Many people have donated money, and, for some money donations all they can offer because they have families and jobs. But, for others, it's an opportunity of a lifetime to change who you are and how you live your life.
It's time to take an easy chance- you don't have to learn another language, you don't have to get a passport, you don't even have to drive.
You just need to take a chance.
